Elk Grove city officials and residents are addressing an incident in which a contractor’s message board displayed a racial slur. According to a city statement, the offensive message appeared on a traffic board at the intersection of Laguna and Franklin Boulevards, a major area in the city.
Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen expressed visceral disappointment and a demand for accountability regarding the incident. "This is shameful and unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our city. I want answers and accountability," she told ABC10. The sign, associated with the Sac Sewer District - Harvest Water Project, was quickly turned off following discovery of the slur.
Elk Grove officials are currently working along with the Sacramento Area Sewer District to comprehensively investigate the incident. In a show of unity against hate, the Elk Grove City Council and municipal staff issued a statement to firmly underline their stance. "Elk Grove is no place for hate. The City Council and staff reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful community for all. We stand united in rejecting, discouraging, and disapproving of any hate-based activity or conduct," read a part of the city's declaration, as provided by ABC10.
In the meantime, the city is calling upon members of the public to come forward should they possess any information pertinent to this violation of community standards. "We will update the public once we learn more," assured Mayor Singh-Allen in a follow-up, reiterating the determination to pursue justice in this case. Anyone with details relating to the incident is encouraged to urgently contact the Elk Grove Police Department at 916-714-5115, according to a request made via KCRA.
