The Elk Grove Police Department's Drone as a First Responder (DFR) Program just took a significant leap forward last Friday, with the Federal Aviation Administration granting a waiver for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, thus removing the previous requirement for human visual observers, the Elk Grove Police Department said in a Facebook post.

With the new FAA waiver, the DFR can deploy drones autonomously across 42-square-miles of the city, Elk Grove's police claim this is unparalleled in law enforcement drone use nationwide, the program aims to boost public safety and operational efficacy, since its beginnings in May 2024 the DFR program has completed over a thousand safe flights, they have assisted in tracking suspects and directing law enforcement without the visual observers previously required which were stationed on rooftops helping coordinate operations from the department's Real-Time Information Center.

"The approval of our BVLOS waiver is a monumental step forward for our DFR Program," said Chief Davis, according to the Elk Grove Police Department's announcement, "this advancement reflects our commitment to leveraging innovative technology to enhance public safety while maintaining accountability and transparency in our operations."

The DFR program functions strictly in response to service calls ensuring that the department's drone usage is directed towards critical situations needing immediate attention, with the BVLOS waiver now in place, Elk Grove police can operate these drones up to an altitude of 400 feet, which the department believes will tremendously aid in the delivery of real-time video intelligence necessary for efficient crime response and it allows ground resources to be better guided without the need for manual oversight that once hindered the fluidity of the program.

Elk Grove PD is eager to continue introducing new technologies to public safety, and with its DFR program now operating under BVLOS clearance, the community is expected to reap the benefits of enhanced security and operational improvements led by this pioneering drone use in law enforcement.
