The city of Elyria is gearing up for its 39th Annual Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., set to take place on January 20, 2025. The event will kick off at 10:30 am with a commemorative walk starting from Ely Square, followed by a program at the Elyria High School Performing Arts Center at 11:00 am. This year's theme, "The Fierce Urgency of Now," echoes King's words and calls for immediate, proactive community engagement.
In the spirit of service Dr. King espoused, participants are encouraged to donate diapers and feminine products, contributing to the community project to aid local needy families. Having gathered at Ely Square, volunteers and community members will march, marking King's legacy through the streets he never walked but is undoubtedly shaped by his dream.
Following the morning activities, the Elyria Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission will host a resource fair from 12:30 to 2:00 pm, featuring a variety of local organizations. Among the participants, attendees will find the AACF, Communities of Color, the Elyria Black Legacy Connection, and Elyria Parks & Recreation. These organizations will provide information and support on various issues, aligning with King's vision for a connected and supportive community.
With a schedule featuring many groups, including the Elyria Public Library, Lorain County Public Health, and the YWCA Racial Equity Center, the resource fair illustrates the ongoing work within the community to address current social challenges. Striving towards racial equity and unity, each organization offers unique avenues for individuals to engage with the day's theme beyond the holiday.
Full details are available on the City of Elyria's website for those interested in joining the day's events or seeking information on how they can contribute.
