A large water main break along N Glebe Road in Arlington has prompted emergency repairs that began yesterday afternoon. DC News Now reports that the Department of Environmental Services (DES) forewarns the work, which is likely to extend through the weekend. The affected section is located between Chain Bridge and Military Roads, causing significant traffic reroutes.
Detours have been set up to redirect traffic, with outbound vehicles from D.C. being diverted onto Chain Bridge Road and northbound travelers toward the District rerouted onto Military Road. "Crews working in the area of a large main on N Glebe between Chain Bridge and Military Roads," the Arlington's DES communicated via social media. "Expect delays and seek an alternate route," advised an Arlington Alert message. These instructions aim to minimize disruptions for the area's commuters, as documented by ARLnow.
This is not the first instance of water infrastructure issues along this stretch. In November 2019 and again in July 2020, similar locations on Glebe Road experienced significant water main breaks, emphasizing the recurring nature of these disruptions. The current repair efforts are focused on a 36-inch water transmission line that is part of a crucial network distributing water from the Washington Aqueduct in D.C. across Arlington County.
For residents and commuters affected by the emergency repairs who are seeking more information, the DES has provided a line of communication. Anyone with questions is asked to call (703) 228-6555 or click on the department's website for updates, as put forth by WJLA. The lack of a precise estimation for the completion time means residents may need to prepare for the possible extension of these conditions beyond the initially projected weekend timeline.
