In the wake of a snowmobiling accident that took the life of a downstate man in Northern Michigan, Emmet County Sheriff Matt Leirstein is advocating for heightened safety measures on the trails. Steven Davis of Novi was located deceased early yesterday, after being reported missing on a snowmobile trail in Carp Lake Township.
The search for Davis, which involved multiple agencies, concluded tragically when his body was found at 12:30 a.m. by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Michigan State Police, Harbor Springs Police Department, and several local fire departments and EMS. According to UpNorthLive, officials believe Davis may have left the marked Snowmobile Trail number 7, leading to a fatal crash.
"Safety should always be a top priority," Sheriff Leirstein said, emphasizing the importance of exercising caution on unfamiliar trails. This statement, obtained by MLive, mirrors his department’s push for greater awareness and preventative action among snowmobilers traversing the picturesque, yet potentially treacherous, landscapes.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, as deputies work to piece together the events that led to this unfortunate outcome. In a sentiment echoed by 9and10news, the sheriff’s office was supported on the scene by Emmet County Search and Rescue, along with other local agencies.
