With frigid temperatures sweeping across Texas and energy demand surging, ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has stepped up with a Weather Watch alert. As the forecast promises biting cold, the grid operator is bracing for increased usage and potential crunches in energy supply. This Watch is effective from today until Friday, January 10, as reported by KHOU. Amid these conditions, ERCOT is on high alert, though no energy emergencies are expected at this time.
Sitting in the path of the brewing storm, CenterPoint Energy is not taking any chances, either. The energy provider has been gearing up for the significant weather event looming over Texas and beyond. According to Click2Houston, proactive measures such as infrastructure winterization and extensive equipment checks were already in motion. "We’re continuing to monitor the severe cold weather expected across several of the communities we serve," Matt Lanza, a member of CenterPoint’s Emergency Preparedness and Response team, emphasized the urgency of ongoing vigilance.
Texas residents are encouraged to stay informed, with ERCOT suggesting that individuals sign up for the Texas Advisory and Notification System (TXANS) for up-to-the-minute grid condition notifications. This information can also be accessed through ERCOT's emergency alerts and corresponding mobile app. Ensuring the public is privy to real-time updates is a top priority for the grid operator during these unpredictable weather events.
The stakes are particularly high in the aftermath of Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which left a trail of devastation and laid bare the vulnerabilities in the state's power infrastructure. CenterPoint has taken its own set of precautions, from stationing emergency crews to testing its 270 substations, in readiness for the formidable weather ahead. The actions taken are in step with regulations set after the calamitous 2021 storm, as CenterPoint reaffirms its commitment to preparedness: "We will continue to actively monitor the models for any severe weather and urge our customers to stay alert in anticipation of quickly changing weather conditions," Lanza told Click2Houston, signaling a proactive stance in contrast to reactive measures of the past.
