In a concerted effort to crack down on retail theft, Eugene Police Department officers have partnered with multiple retailers across west Eugene. This initiative, fueled by an Organized Retail Crime Association grant, was distributed by the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission to specifically target rampant theft incidents that have been plaguing local businesses. Loss prevention teams from Coastal Farm, Home Depot, Target, Walmart, and Wilco were among those advised to directly contact the police when dealing with suspicious individuals.
As a result of this collaboration, on January 22, Eugene Police were able to apprehend and charge several alleged perpetrators. According to a statement by the Eugene Police Department, three individuals were taken into custody with a range of charges from felony warrants to drug possession. The operations aim not only to prevent theft but also to deter others from committing similar crimes, particularly with the goal to swiftly apprehend repeat offenders and those who act aggressively towards staff.
Among those arrested was 27-year-old Emily Marie Kovachy, who now faces charges for theft in the second degree, in addition to two felony warrants. Bryan Wayne Beaudro, age 35, was charged with criminal trespass in the second degree alongside an existing court warrant. Charles Morris Zencius, a 49-year-old, was taken in on charges including theft in the second degree, felon in possession of a restricted weapon, possession of methamphetamine, and violating an assault parole warrant, as detailed by the City of Eugene.
The Eugene Police Department has diligently worked to quickly address these issues, providing some relief to local retailers agonizing under the weight of theft-related losses. This partnership aims to create a stronger deterrent against retail crime, ensuring a safer shopping experience for customers and a more secure environment for business personnel. The actively maintained communication line between the officers and the stores is set to serve as a model for future collaborations intended to maintain communal order and safety.
