Rockville, Maryland, became the locus of emergency response after a sterilization machine at a local research lab caught fire, prompting evacuation and decontamination measures. The incident occurred at the MilliporeSigma research facility, a new $300 million biosafety testing lab specializing in various scientific services. The fire broke out late Thursday morning, requiring the presence of roughly 50 firefighters, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer. Fortunately, WTOP reported no injuries.

Contained and fought within the biohazard room of the facility, the fire originated in an autoclave machine, used for sterilization by means of high-pressure steam. With about firefighters battling the blaze, the smoke conditions necessitated a decontamination process for both responding crews and lab personnel as a cautionary step. "They did have some smoke conditions. Apparently, they were made aware that there was an autoclave machine that was in use. There was a small fire that involved some material that was being processed," Piringer informed WTOP. The exact nature of the material involved has not been disclosed.

The fire and subsequent procedures took place at the lab's address on the 9900 block of Blackwell Road. The substance within the autoclave, upon catching fire, produced an extent of smoke strong enough to warrant preemptive safety actions. This included the evacuation of the large commercial structure and the decontamination of individuals exposed to the potential hazards. Smoke was observed still emerging when firefighters arrived, as detailed by a statement from Piringer shared by NBC Washington.

Utilized for their capabilities to nullify biological dangers such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores, autoclaves are a staple in health and industry sectors. After stepping out of Adventist HealthCare hospital, workers and firefighters, having been exposed to potential biohazards, were directed to undergo a meticulous decontamination. According to a company statement, Millipore Sigma, the life sciences division of Merck KGaA based in the US and Canada, had opened this cutting-edge facility back in October 2024, focusing primarily on "biosafety testing, analytical development, and cell bank manufacturing services," as WJLA reported. More information about the fire's cause and the extent of damage to the lab is awaited as investigations continue.
