A new chairmanship will guide Michigan's natural resources and policies. Last Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that former Congressman Dan Kildee had been appointed to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission (NRC). This move sets the stage for Kildee's potential influence over the state's wildlife and environmental management.

According to MidMichiganNow, Kildee's role as chair will be to oversee regulations on hunting and fishing and the power to authorize open seasons for animals. Kildee, who has recently taken the reins at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint as president and CEO, is succeeding Tomas Baird, whose term on the commission has expired. His appointment is, however, contingent upon the approval by the Michigan Senate.

Kildee, who served in Congress for 12 years representing Mid-Michigan, brings his experience to his new position, which marks continuity of public service in a new arena. ABC12 added that the commission Kildee is set to chair is responsible for designating game species and establishing open hunting seasons through official orders.

This appointment underscores a transition from federal legislative to local executive stewardship for Kildee, whose background includes a Bachelor of Science in administration with a concentration in community development from Central Michigan University. In a statement detailed by Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), the press release detailed: "Kildee is appointed as a Democrat for a term commencing January 17, 2025, and expiring December 31, 2028. Kildee is also appointed as chair of the commission for a term commencing January 17, 2025, and expiring at the pleasure of the Governor."

With these new appointments, including Kildee's, the state is advancing towards a revised composition of its boards and commissions. Alongside Kildee, Heather Cummings and Paul Cordes were announced to represent their respective parties on the Board of State Canvassers, with each of these appointments waiting for Senate confirmation. The next meeting of the NRC is scheduled for February 13, when Kildee's chairmanship could begin shaping Michigan's conservation and resource management policies.
