A respected figure within the law enforcement community, Rush’s bravery was cemented into local lore following a 2014 incident, where he was wounded on the steps of the Forsyth County Courthouse while engaging with a gunman. This act of courage did not go unrecognized, earning him the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Purple Heart award, and notably the title of Deputy Sheriff of the Year for Valor from the Georgia’s Sheriff’s Association. Rush’s legacy, as it stands, is marked by his heroics and a career spanning over three decades of service.
Remembrances have begun to pour in, with Sheriff Ron Freeman expressing profound loss. "As Sheriff, losing a member of the FCSO is my nearly sole fear. I have personally known Daniel since before he began as a Dispatcher at FCSO in 1990. Sergeant Rush’s 35th anniversary with FCSO would have been February 8," Freeman wrote on Facebook. "Sergeant Rush is a genuine hero," FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
