Kristian Titriyski made his return to the court on Sunday after recovering from an illness, contributing significantly to the No. 4 Hawaii men's volleyball team’s 3-0 sweep over No. 20 McKendree. The 6-foot-8 freshman from Bulgaria recorded 17 kills and two service aces, helping the Rainbow Warriors secure the win with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-16 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, as reported by Spectrum Local News.
Tread Rosenthal, the sophomore setter for University of Hawaii, didn't hesitate to explain the factors behind the team's dominant performance against McKendree: "Kristian Titriyski. That’s kind of it," he told Spectrum Local News. Titriyski, who was affected by a stomach flu during Friday's season opener, returned to form, contributing to the team's offense with a .448 hitting percentage. Freshman Adrien Roure also played a significant role, adding 13 kills to the team’s effort, helping the squad establish early-season momentum.
Hawaii displayed improved offensive efficiency in the rematch, hitting .463 for the match, a notable increase from their previous contest. Unlike last Friday's game, where Titriyski was substituted, he contributed significantly in this match, executing attacks with precision. His performance, along with the team's overall cohesion, was highlighted in an article by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
As Hawaii progresses through their season-opening homestand, they are set to face Harvard in upcoming matches, with Coach Charlie Wade humorously noting the intellectual reputation of their opponents, "smart guys do less dumb stuff," according to Spectrum Local News. The team acknowledges that, although Harvard has not yet played a match this season, they still present a challenge for the Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii will need to demonstrate their improving performance to effectively compete with the strategically disciplined Crimson.
Meanwhile, Hawaii's coach also made it a point to address an earlier incident involving an "unfortunate, unacceptable and inappropriate gesture" by one of the bench players, ensuring that the matter was addressed and disciplinary actions had been taken, as reported by Spectrum Local News.
