A Galt man stood before a court and admitted his role in a wildlife contraband scheme. Fifty-one-year-old Jason Keith Bruce pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to illegally smuggle the trophy of an endangered Ladakh urial into the United States, as announced by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

Bruce, a big game hunter, worked with 45-year-old Pir Danish Ali, a Pakistan-based CEO of a hunting outfitter. Operating in the Ladakh mountains—a region between India and Pakistan—their hunt targeted the Ladakh urial, an endangered species of wild sheep. This hunt adds to concerns about the survival of the species, as well as the broader impact of human activities on the natural environment.

Court documents obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office outline the details of the collusion. In 2018, after hunting the urial under the guise of Pir's company, Bruce and his associate attempted to mislead U.S. customs by misdeclaring the species of the smuggled trophy. They also presented forged Pakistani government documents to officials from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

However, their scheme was uncovered following a detailed investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which identified environmental violations. The investigation revealed at least 97 trophies brought into the United States with fraudulent documentation. Pir's business was found to be central to the operation, with at least 25 hunters involved in similar activities between 2013 and 2018, violating conservation laws aimed at protecting biodiversity.

As part of the ongoing legal proceedings, Bruce is scheduled for sentencing on May 20. He faces a potential maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with the actual sentence to be determined by the court based on statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The charges against Pir remain allegations, as he is presumed innocent until proven guilty under the legal standard of beyond a reasonable doubt.
