The City of Galveston has seen the closure of two more dining establishments, marking a continued trend of local restaurant closures. In a recent announcement, owners Jessica and John McAleer have confirmed that their two restaurants, 1817 Steak & Seafare and Lil’ Buffalo Grille, have ceased operations as of yesterday. The couple attributed their departure from the restaurant industry to a need to refocus on other aspects of their lives. In a social media post, the McAleers conveyed their gratitude, stating, "We are deeply grateful for the support of our community, our team, and our loyal customers throughout the years," as reported by KHOU.
1817 Steak & Seafare, opened in June 2024, quickly garnered a reputation for its robust wine selection and high-quality steaks. Sadly, closing, fans of the establishment are encouraged to try to visit for a final dining experience. According to the Houston Chronicle, the news has left many patrons disheartened, as expressed in online comments commending the high standards of the McAleer's facilities. The sister restaurant, Lil’ Buffalo Grille, known for its casual breakfast and lunch offerings, also shut its doors.
With the McAleers stepping away, Dennis Byrd of the Island Famous Hospitality Group is set to take over the now-vacant spaces, promising new restaurant concepts for the Evia community. The details of Byrd's plans for the locations are currently under wraps. Admirably, the McAleers showed their support for the upcoming ventures, sharing, "We are excited for the new restaurants coming and can’t wait to support them," as noted by KHOU.
The hospitality landscape in Galveston has faced various challenges recently, echoed in numerous closures over the past year, including the likes of Tortuga Mexican Kitchen and Texas Pit Stop BBQ. In the face of such changes, the community expresses both sorrow over the closures and optimism for future culinary endeavors in the area, shared through memories of favorite dishes and anticipation for new dining experiences.
