An unexpected gate malfunction at the Longhorn Dam resulted in a noticeable decline in the water levels of Lady Bird Lake, exposing debris and prompting community cleanup efforts. On Tuesday, Jan. 28, during routine maintenance, one of the nine gates at the dam failed to close properly, leading to the lake's water level to gradually recede. Austin Water reported that this was due to a scheduled inspection and repair of the gate's lifting mechanism, as part of a Capital Improvement Project, an effort that seems to now have backfired, causing for some scrambling to control the damage. The cause for the malfunction remains to be determined, as stated by KXAN.
As the lake's level dropped from 428.36 feet to 425.91 feet within a few short hours, crews were pushed to quickly install a temporary barrier to prevent any further decline in the water levels. The urgency to not allow for the situation to worsen was evident, and Austin Water assures that the incident does not affect the city's water or wastewater services. This has been a call to action not just for city officials, but also for residents, who see an opportunity to restore the lake's shores to a state of cleanliness and health.
The diminished water levels have uncovered a swath of litter along the lake's perimeter, specifically near the Holiday Inn Boat Ramp. "We've definitely seen a fair amount," Grady Reed, vice president of park operation at the Trail Conservancy, told FOX 7 Austin in an interview. Reed elaborated on the importance of addressing the issue of trash within natural spaces, and how the current low levels are revealing the hidden impact of human neglect.
In response to this environmental setback, the Trail Conservancy has organized volunteer events for Thursday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Feb. 1, with the aim to quickly mobilize the community in a collective effort to clear away the trash. Volunteers are encouraged to meet at designated spots – International Shores on Thursday and Holiday Inn Boat Ramp on Saturday. Interested individuals can pre-register online to contribute to these cleanup efforts, a direct and immediate way to engage with their surroundings, making them cleaner for everyone's benefit.
