Georgia’s furry weather forecaster, General Beauregard "Beau" Lee, is set to make his annual Groundhog Day prediction this Sunday, February 2 at the Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson. Beau, the Peach State's own prognosticating groundhog, will share his insight on whether winter will stubbornly cling on or if spring will grace the region early, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Having inherited the mantle from a predecessor in 1991, Beau has reportedly significantly outstripped Punxsutawney Phil's prediction accuracy, boasting a 63% accurate weather forecasting record compared to Phil's 45.5%, according to a study covered by FOX 5 Atlanta. Dauset Trails Nature Center even suggests Beau's accuracy rate could actually be upward of 90%.
The origins of this whimsical Groundhog Day tradition can be traced back to early Christian Candlemas and ancient Celtic customs. However, it was German immigrants who originated the concept of a weather-predicting critter in America, a role originally filled by hedgehogs and badgers in Europe, before the groundhog became the American standard. Unlike the rest of the squirrel family members to which it belongs, the groundhog, or woodchuck, hibernates in a comatose state with heart rates plummeting to a mere five beats per minute, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta.
If intrigued, fans and spectators are to definitely consider attending the event. Doors open at 6 a.m., and Beau is scheduled to share his 2025 weather prediction at 7:30 a.m. on the dot. The Dauset Trails Nature Center, now Beau's residence post-relocation from Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn in 2017, vouches for his time-tested forecasting prowess. Attendees can also enjoy souvenir shopping and food on site, notes The Jackson Progress-Argus. Beau, now over 30 years in age, is all set to uphold his role, with the nature center assuring that he's still very much up to the task.
