In a recent move within the Texas judicial system, Governor Greg Abbott has taken to the bench with the appointment of Michael Dickens to preside over the 477th Judicial District Court in Denton County. Announced yesterday, Dickens will serve a term that runs up until the waning days of 2026, concluding on December 31, or when a successor is firmly in place, according to a press release from the Governor's office.
Currently serving as an assistant district attorney for Denton County, Dickens's appointment came alongside a detailed list of his professional associations and his academic credentials. He is a member of various legal groups, including the State Bar of Texas and the Texas District & County Attorneys Association. Engaged in the community, he has notably made his presence felt on the Denton County Sexual Assault Response Team and previously, working with children, as a part of the Multidisciplinary Team at the Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County. Not limited to the legal realm, Dickens played an active role as a mentor for Communities in Schools of North Texas until his selection to the bench, striking a tone of commitment to youth and education, as mentioned by the Governor's office.
Dickens’s educational path traced back to Texas State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, and carried forward to the Texas Tech University School of Law, earning the title of Juris Doctor. Alongside his legal pursuits, he also infuses his energies into local passions, illustrated by his membership in the Denton High School Tennis Booster Club, speaking to a broader picture of a candidate intertwined with his community's fabric.
