An overnight blaze in Grand Rapids has left one adult in critical condition after a fire tore through a home on Griggs Street SE. As reported by WZZM13, the Grand Rapids Police Department said the fire began around 4 a.m., and upon arrival, responders found six individuals—four adults and two children—inside the residence.
Firefighting teams carried out several rescues while one person made an escape through a ground-floor window, another through a second-story window, according to information provided by FOX 17. All the individuals were transported to local hospitals: the children were released from medical care, three adults remained hospitalized in stable condition and the critical but stable adult continues to fight for recovery.
The house, described as a two-story, wood-framed structure, became a site of urgency and peril as the Grand Rapids Fire Department was alerted to the emergency just before 4 a.m., according to WWMT. This incident marks a grim echo to a recent tragedy, as crews responded to a deadly fire on the same street just days before. The cause of the latest fire is still under investigation by the GRFD fire investigator.
In the wake of the blaze and a reminder of vulnerability, Grand Rapids Fire Department encourages residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, offering free home safety assessments and installations of alarms, citizens need only call 311 or dial (616) 456-3000.
