The anticipated World of Winter festival in Grand Rapids will commence without its high-flying technological display after concerns over drone safety prompted organizers to cancel the drone show scheduled for next Saturday. This precaution follows an incident last month in Orlando, where malfunctioning drones resulted in injuries, including one requiring a child to undergo open-heart surgery, as reported by WOOD TV.

The Federal Aviation Administration has suspended the permit of the Texas-based drone operator, Sky Elements Drones, which has conducted numerous shows in 2024 and was slated to manage the Grand Rapids event. According to WZZM 13, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. said, "due to recent concerns and safety issues related to drone flights and shows," the cancellation was an unfortunate but necessary move. The FAA's request for a nationwide pause on drone shows further influenced this decision, clarifying that it is unrelated to mysterious drone sightings reported over the past month.

Communications Director Bill Kirk, in a conversation with WZZM 13, emphasized safety as their primary concern, stating "There have been some issues with drone shows over the last couple of weeks. A handful of other ones have been canceled around the country, so we just wanted to take a really precautionary approach." Despite the cancellation, Kirk assured that an alternative opening event will take place, offering a DJ, live ice carving, and food trucks among other attractions.

Though the drone display was set to be a first of its kind for the city, officials have not discounted the possibility of featuring drone shows in future editions of the festival if they can be executed safely. "It’s a safety issue for sure," Kirk told News 8, echoing previously expressed sentiments. While the technological splendor of the Starry Night Drone Show will be missed, the event organizers remain committed to delivering an engaging experience, as shared by FOX 17 News, which detailed the festival's various offerings including an interactive Lite Brite board and fire pits to enchant attendees.

The World of Winter festival which lays claim to being the United States' largest winter festival per Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. spans from next Friday, January 10, through March 2, with a rich program of art installations and live performances designed to engage the community and celebrate the season.
