An exchange of gunfire on Sunday night following a police chase in Knox County led to one individual being hospitalized and no injuries reported among Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers. The incident began near the Knox/Loudon County line when a traffic stop escalated into a chase that concluded with the suspect crashing at the I-40 East entrance ramp on Watt Road, according to details from WATE.
As per WVLT-TV, THP Special Agent Jason Pack stated, "Initial information indicates the suspect fired at officers with a rifle, forcing troopers to protect themselves by returning fire." Following the altercation, the suspect was transported to a local emergency room. However, no life-threatening injuries have been reported, and there was no harm to any trooper involved in the incident with a tense situation resulting from the suspect's initial aggression.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has taken the lead on the case, supporting the ongoing investigation alongside the Knox County District Attorney General’s Office and in collaboration with the Loudon County Sheriff's Office, as mentioned in reports by WBIR. "At the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI agents are investigating a reported officer-involved shooting involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol," said the TBI in a statement.
Details surrounding the traffic stop that initiated the pursuit, and subsequent event are still developing as TBI agents piece together their investigation, findings from which will eventually be shared with the District Attorney's Office. For more information, updates will be provided as they become available from official state and local agency sources.
