Gwinnett County is on the move, with the Board of Commissioners green-lighting a slew of updates poised to reshape the everyday flow and care of its communities and critters. In last week's meeting, the board stamped its approval on contracts totaling over $6.8 million. Funds are allocated to ease traffic congestion, enhance pedestrian pathways, and improve animal services, according to the county's official announcement.

The notorious East Park Place Boulevard and Stone Mountain Highway intersection is set to see a $1.18 million makeover, delivered by Azimuth Contractors LLC. Three left turn lanes will be added. As per the official press release, signal upgrades and sidewalk repairs will also be part of the project, funded by the SPLOST program, to improve both car and foot traffic flow.

The west side of Braselton Highway will soon be easier to navigate, due to Vertical Earth Inc.'s $1.23 million contract. This project, funded by the 2017 SPLOST program, will add sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to businesses, improving community links. Crabapple Circle will also get new curbs and gutters to enhance its appearance and pedestrian safety.

Not to be sidelined, the Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center is in the queue for a transformative expansion. An additional 3,520 square feet will foster more robust animal intake, adoption, and training facilities, ushering in a new era for animal care in Gwinnett. The center will sprout new outdoor areas for animals to bond and bask in the shade, while Place Services, Inc. marshals the $4.4 million project, sourced from the 2023 SPLOST funds, poised to reconfigure existing spaces for the K-9 unit, quarantine, and high-risk kennels, reported the county's press announcement.
