As predicted by the National Weather Service in Houston, the city is now experiencing a sunny day with temps reaching near 45 degrees and northerly winds moving at 10 to 15 mph. This evening, Houstonians can expect a mostly clear night with a low dipping around 32 degrees and a north wind continuing at a reduced pace of 5 to 10 mph.
The National Weather Service has also rightly issued a Freeze Warning for parts of Southeast Texas, including Houston and surrounding areas like The Woodlands and College Station. With the mercury set to potentially plummet to 27 degrees and wind chills possibly reaching to an even sharper 14 degrees, the Freeze Warning will remain active until 9 a.m. today. During this time, residents are strongly recommended to bundle up against the cold, shielding plants, pets, and plumbing from the potentially damaging frost and freeze.
In a statement obtained by KHOU, the National Weather Service clarifies that a Freeze Warning is called when "temperatures are forecasted to go below 32°F for a long period of time," a situation grave enough to destroy certain residential and commercial botanical life. Simultaneously, a Cold Weather Advisory is in place until 11 a.m., advising the public to wear appropriate clothing to protect against the chill, although temperatures are not expected to reach extreme lows.
As Texans are no strangers to energy concerns during inclement weather, ERCOT has preemptively issued a Weather Watch, which will be actively monitored from January 6 through January 10. In reassuring news, ERCOT's CEO has expressed that the Texas grid has been fortified significantly, with over 10,000 megawatts added since last winter. According to the NWS, despite the watch, ERCOT does not anticipate an energy emergency and maintains that grid conditions are expected to remain stable for the duration.
Conscientiously checking on vulnerable populations such as the elderly during this weather event is essential, as urged by authorities. In addition, with the power grid expected to hold firm, Texas residents can keep an informed eye on the supply and demand of power, as well as on the grid conditions, via real-time updates provided by ERCOT on their platform.
