As Houston prepares for a spell of severe winter weather, local officials and organizations are responding by providing shelters and warming centers throughout the city and surrounding counties. With expectations of freezing temperatures and snow in the forecast, these facilities offer critical refuge from the harsh conditions expected to hit the region.
An excessive cold front will sweep through the Houston area, leading to temperatures plummeting near or below freezing from Monday night through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service predicts a low of around 15 degrees on Tuesday night, with snow accumulations ranging from 1-3 inches and up to 5-6 inches in isolated areas. Schools, government offices, and medical facilities are closing in anticipation of the inclement weather, according to Houston Public Media.
In response, warming centers have been established across the Houston area, as reported by KHOU. Residents seeking warmth can visit any of the city-designated multi-service and community centers, such as Acres Homes, Denver Harbor, and Kashmere, which will remain open 24 hours from Sunday evening through Thursday midday. Additional warming centers are also available at various Harris County Community Centers, with operating hours that vary by location, offering essentials like water and MREs.
Fort Bend and Montgomery counties are also extending their resources to those in need. Fort Bend County Libraries and the American Red Cross Shelters, such as the one at Kingwood First Baptist Church, are providing warmth, basic sustenance, and, in some cases, even allowing residents to bring their pets. Brazoria and Galveston counties have joined in these efforts as well, with places like The Salvation Army and Believers Sanctuary in Alvin embracing those seeking a heated space.
A full list of the warming centers with detailed addresses and operating hours is available on Houston Public Media and KHOU's official reports. In addition, residents in need of shelter can contact the 211 Texas/United Way HELPLINE for assistance in locating the nearest facility. With a collective effort across multiple organizations and community pillars, Houston is working to ensure the safety and warmth of its residents during this frigid time.
