As cold weather approaches, Houston is preparing for a possible cold snap that could strain its power system. CenterPoint Energy is using lessons learned from the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, which caused power outages and 246 deaths, to strengthen its cold-weather preparations and ensure reliable service during the coming winter, as reported by KHOU.
CenterPoint has inspected its equipment, including all 270 substations, to prepare for high demand due to expected cold weather. They’ve also installed heaters, checked freeze protection, and repaired insulation. With severe winter weather expected in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and Ohio, Meteorology Manager Matt Lanza said, "We're continuing to monitor the severe cold weather expected across several of the communities we serve in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana and Ohio." He also urged customers to stay alert, saying, "We will continue to actively monitor the models for any severe weather and urge our customers to stay alert in anticipation of quickly changing weather conditions," as stated by Click2Houston.
CenterPoint has positioned Compressed Natural Gas trucks in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi to quickly supplement the natural gas network during a crisis, enhancing the reliability of the system. As part of its preparedness strategy, the company has conducted emergency training drills for personnel and contractors to better respond to severe winter weather. With cold weather approaching, Houstonians are advised to follow energy provider guidance and prepare for potential challenges. CenterPoint has also released its 2025 Winter Energy Guide on its website to help residents navigate the season, according to KHOU.
