As the Houston Independent School District (HISD) continues to navigate its transformative journey under the New Education System (NES), Fleming Middle School stands as a testament to burgeoning progress in education post-pandemic. In a recent update by Click2Houston, Fleming Middle School, currently in its second year under NES, has reported notable improvements in math, science, and reading, signalling a positive trajectory.
Under the lead of Principal Devin Adams, Fleming Middle School has achieved a 38% proficiency rate in mathematics and 59% in reading, with Adams stating, "Even better than expected in some areas. So, I’m really excited to share them," in a statement obtained by Click2Houston. Despite not meeting the goal of 50% proficiency in math, the school's persistence in elevating academic standards, particularly in improving students’ capability to perform at grade level, represents a commendable stride in overcoming the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In contrast, overall results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as "Nation’s Report Card," revealed that HISD's scores remained mostly unchanged, with a mild uptick in fourth-grade math as a slight exception. These findings were reflected through data sourced from Houston Landing, which reported that changes seen in the scores of economically disadvantaged students and those spread across different racial demographics only occasionally reached statistical significance, particularly for fourth-grade math.
HISD Superintendent Mike Miles emphasized the district's relative stability as a positive sign, suggesting "We’re moving in the right direction while all the other districts are moving in the wrong direction," in a video comment posted on HISD's YouTube channel, Houston Landing reported. However, HISD students' performance on the NAEP suggests there is considerable room for progress, as only select demographics have shown significant improvement, and reading scores remain ostensibly stagnant since 2019.
The contrasting picture painted by the performance of Fleming Middle School and the broader HISD outcomes on the Nation's Report Card brings a nuanced understanding to the ongoing efforts of the district's leadership. It emphasizes the long road to academic recovery and the need for tailored strategies that address the diverse challenges faced by different schools and student populations within the district.
