The Houston Public Library (HPL) is hosting a notable event for the local literary community later this month. According to their announcement, the Houston Public Library invites readers to engage in a conversation with Houston's own Jennifer Mathieu on January 25. The author's fresh novel "The Faculty Lounge" sets the theme for the discussion, promising to shed light on the realities faced by educators in a Texas high school, as told by an author with firsthand experience in the classroom.
Hosted at the Walker Neighborhood Library, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the gathering isn't just for those who can make it in person. An accessible live stream will also be available on HPL's Facebook and YouTube pages, ensuring that no interested party misses out. While the in-person audience will get to luxuriate in Mathieu's prose, virtual attendees are offered a digital seat at the table, bringing the discussion to a potentially global audience. Registration is open online – a direct result of HPL's 'Reading Local' series commitment, which endeavors to glue the local author community to the public at large. Completing the local loop, Brazos Bookstore will set up shop, offering Mathieu's works ripe for the signing.
Jennifer Mathieu is no stranger to praise, her young adult novels speaking to swathes of readers worldwide, translated into a stunning array of over twenty languages. Hard-won from characters deeply etched, "Moxie" stands as a beacon among her works, having been adapted into a motion picture helmed by the respected Amy Poehler. Now, with close to two decades of teaching under her belt and a background in journalism as well, Mathieu delivers "The Faculty Lounge" – her debut novel for an adult audience.
The Houston Public Library boasts a vast network designed to support and enlighten Houston's sizable population. Sprawling over 40 public service units, from the Central Library to Regional and Neighborhood Libraries, not to mention History Research Centers and the TECHLinks – HPL can wear many caps. Their scope even stretches to the mobile, with the Mobile Express delivering knowledge on wheels, ensuring that Houston's 2.3 million residents are never far from a good book or an enlightening event.
