It's time to bundle up and embrace the chill in Muskegon, as the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park announced the seasonal debut of its natural ice luge track and sprawling ice rink this past weekend. Amid the frosty climes and consistent snowfalls, the dedicated team has pushed through to provide winter sports enthusiasts with a thrilling escape. Working "around the clock" to prepare the luge track, which stretches an impressive 650 feet, staff packed and sculpted ice to shape the four banked curves that allow racers to reach thrilling speeds of up to 30 mph. Organizers suggest that for those seeking to hurl down the icy chute, the park offers lessons for beginners, which started yesterday. The lessons are complete with coaching, practice runs, and a ceremonious race concluded with medals, as reported by MLive.
Despite minor hiccups like "bumpy" spots due to its novelty, the park's main ice rink, which spans 2 acres, is already welcoming skaters. For those preferring the serene glide through natural landscapes, the ice skating trail snaking through a forest setting is currently under work to attain the requisite thickness to support heavy traffic. Daniel Bonner, an outdoor adventure specialist with the park, has been painstakingly guiding the construction of the rink and the luge track, overseeing tasks such as utilizing 20 dump trucks of snow and crafting a solid foundation with multiple coats of water applied via firehose.
In the works are also the trails set aside for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, which remain closed due to insufficient snowfall. However, with lake-effect snow anticipated over the weekend, there's palpable hope within the park's ranks that these paths will soon witness a flurry of skiers. According to Bonner, as per WZZM13, they are optimistic that “by next week, all of the activities they have to offer at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park will be open to the public.”
Visitors looking to plan their outings are encouraged to stay up-to-date with the latest park conditions. The park has made it convenient for guests to check current activity statuses through a live feed camera and trail cam views on their website. Potential visitors seeking information on conditions, admission, or equipment rental can visit the park's website at msports.org.
