Iconic Amor y Amargo Cocktail Bar Reopens in East Village NYC, DEP to Hold Hearing on Charbroiler RegulationsSource: Google Street View

The beloved New York bitters cocktail bar, Amor y Amargo, is once again shaking and stirring in its original East Village location. As reported by Eater, the venue at 443 East Sixth Street at Avenue A started welcoming back patrons last Friday. Known for its signature drinks featuring bitters and Italian amari, the bar's lineup of cocktails remains faithful to its roots, boasting fan favorites like the Long Game and the James Run Free.

Overthrow Hospitality, the parent company headed by Ravi DeRossi and beverage director Sother Teague, first launched Amor y Amargo in 2011. After transitioning to an adjacent space on Avenue A in 2020, the location was completely shuttered in late 2023, following the earlier closure of its Williamsburg expansion that debuted in 2019. According to DeRossi in a statement obtained by EV Grieve, while they are "not 100 percent sure yet what we are going to do with the space at Ave A," the company is actively discussing a multitude of innovative concepts for the site.

While patrons toast to the bar's return, another item of interest on the New York food and drink scene is the potential regulation of commercial charbroilers by the Department of Environmental Protection. Aimed at improving air quality, this proposal might require restaurant owners cooking in excess of 875 pounds of meat per week to install emissions control devices or, prohibit the use of older models installed before May 6, 2016. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, as noted by Eater.

In a more collaborative spirit, the burger series Burgers With Buddies at Prospect Heights bistro Gertrude's continues to garner attention. The event invites guest chefs from across the city to craft their unique takes on the American classic. Chefs lined up for the biweekly Monday event include Ilene Rosen of R&D Foods, Matt Almquist of Roberta’s, Patrick Brutto of Faccia Brutto, Telly Justice of HAGS, and Stefano Mariotta of Jewish diner Gertie. This special runs alongside the restaurant's regular menu, building up to a gastronomic crescendo for, the borough's burger aficionados.
