A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg outside a deli on East 138th Street in Mott Haven Monday afternoon, and as of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in the case. Police responded to a 911 call for a person shot at 460 East 138th Street just after 11:14 a.m., finding the victim with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
The shooting happened outside Ali Deli & Grocery, according to Hubbiz. EMS transported the man to Lincoln Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, as reported by News12 New York. The NYPD said the victim is 31 years old.
The shooting occurred on East 138th Street in Mott Haven. Surveillance footage from the deli or nearby cameras could help investigators identify a suspect.
A Precinct Already Stretched by Robbery Numbers
The shooting falls within the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 40th Precinct, which operates out of a newer, $85 million station house at 567 East 149th Street that opened in late 2024 with the city's first dedicated public community room, according to Open House New York. In April, the NYPD also announced plans to restaff the former 40th Precinct building at East 138th Street and Alexander Avenue as the new headquarters for Patrol Borough Bronx South, adding roughly 200 officers to South Bronx commands, the Bronx Times reported.
Despite that expansion, the command continues to post some of the city's highest robbery totals. NYPD CompStat data through late July showed the 40th Precinct recorded 210 year-to-date robbery complaints, the highest total of any precinct in New York City, even as that number reflected a 17% decline from 2025. Three weeks before Monday's shooting, a 33-year-old customer was shot during an early-morning takeover robbery at 149 Grill and Deli on East 149th Street in nearby Melrose, an incident Hoodline covered in its report on that shooting — another case that also fell within the 40th Precinct's command.
