The coliseum of college football in Orlando closed its bowl season with the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, culminating in a victory for the Illinois Fighting Illini over the South Carolina Gamecocks. As reported by FOX 35 Orlando, the win was not the only cause for celebration; fans were treated to an on-field wedding, "We love Cheez-Its," the groom said. "We love college football. We love each other."
On the financial front, Florida Citrus Sports projected the trifecta of bowl games—Cure Bowl, Pop-Tarts Bowl, and Cheez-It Citrus Bowl—to have injected an estimated $100 million into Orlando's local economy, indicating the city's role as a holiday family destination has increasingly begun to merge with its sports identity. Yet on the gridiron, Illinois' 10th win this season, a 21-17 battle against South Carolina, signified their first such accomplishment since 2001, a hard-fought contest highlighted by Josh McCray's second touchdown, a decisive 9-yard rush in the fourth quarter, as detailed by ClickOrlando.
According to ClickOrlando, Illinois' coach Bret Bielema praised running back McCray, stating, "He never looks for outward excuses," attesting to his hard work and determination. In a game that saw five lead changes, neither team established dominance, with a final score that rested on Illinois' ability to capitalize on South Carolina's missed opportunities. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer encountered his frustrations during an on-field confrontation with Bielema over a kickoff return signal, which, while technically legal, purportedly veered from the spirit of the game.
The Illini's defense proved itself by halting the Gamecocks at a critical juncture - the 7-yard line with just over three minutes remaining - effectively sealing the win. South Carolina's shot at their tenth-season victory fell short, punctuated by failed conversions and a missed field goal. Beamer reflected on the outcome, per ClickOrlando, "The whole key to this game was finishing,” Beamer said. “We didn’t finish."
Looking ahead, both teams took the field of Camping World Stadium with young rosters, signaling promise for their 2025 campaigns. Illinois is set to open its season against Western Illinois, with South Carolina facing Virginia Tech in Atlanta.
