The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a freeze warning and a cold weather advisory for the early hours today, urging residents to take immediate precautions against the biting chill. According to the weather alert on NWS, several areas in northeast and northern Florida are to brace for sub-freezing temperatures descending as low as 25 degrees, with wind chill values potentially dropping to a frigid 21 degrees.
In the face of this intense cold, the advisory stresses the importance of layering up and donning proper attire, including a hat and gloves, to try to avoid the onset of hypothermia or frostbite. The cold wind chills as low as 20 degrees could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken, warns the National Weather Service. Affected regions include Bradford, Inland St. Johns, Inland Flagler, and several other nearby locales, encompassing urban centers such as Jacksonville and Ocala down to rural expanses where tender vegetation and outdoor animals are particularly vulnerable.
Residents are advised to put into action protective measures for pipes, plants, and pets. The elderly, the young, and the homeless are singled out as exceptionally susceptible to the adverse impacts of such cold conditions. Community members are urged to ensure tender vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate protection from the cold temperatures and to take measures to safeguard the most vulnerable among them from the elements.
The cold snap is expected to loosen its grip following the morning hours, giving way to a sunnier day with a high peaking at around 53 degrees. Northward winds will keep the chill in the air, prompting individuals to continually ensure they are adequately prepared for outdoor activities. Tonight, the mercury will dip again to a low near 36 degrees, under mostly clear skies and gentler north winds clocking in at 3 to 5 mph. While tomorrow promises sunnier skies with a high near 61, residents must remain on guard as nightfall is likely to bring another round of colder temperatures, dipping down to around 40 degrees.
