Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan delivered a speech during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, focusing on the need for unity and change. She highlighted initiatives designed to address disparities in wealth, health, and opportunity in the city's Black and Brown communities.
According to the City of Jacksonville release, every child in Jacksonville deserves access to education, opportunity, and dignity. No neighborhood should be overlooked as the city works toward economic progress, and it is essential that all voices are heard in building a government that is more diverse, inclusive, and fair for everyone.
The mayor discussed the achievements of her administration, including the approval of a $300 million community benefits agreement linked to stadium reconstruction. She noted that this agreement is the largest of its kind in the nation. The agreement focuses on workforce development, economic growth, homelessness, and affordable housing.
In addition to infrastructure and housing, the administration has worked to increase representation. The mayor pointed out that the city's boards and commissions, now more diverse than ever, are actively working to make government more accessible. She also announced a 90-day plan to gather public input on the city’s budget.
Mayor Deegan emphasized that lasting change depends on community participation and collective progress. She called on residents to act with audacious faith and to work toward creating a more inclusive Jacksonville.
