The Knoxville Police Department is actively investigating a series of automobile break-ins in the Sequoyah Hills area, including the Farrington neighborhood. According to WATE, at least nine incidents were reported between Sunday night and Monday morning, and two firearms were confirmed stolen.
As the break-ins mount, the Knoxville Police Department has increased its patrols in the affected neighborhoods to prevent further crimes and assist in identifying the perpetrators. Despite extensive searches, no surveillance footage of sufficiently investigative value has been unearthed thus far.
One individual affected by the burglaries, Alex Ewell, shared his experience with WBIR, "My window's broken on my other side," Ewell said. "I was backed in and the other side was against the fence where you couldn't see anything and that window was shattered right here." He also expressed concerns about the possibility of repeat offenses, emphasizing the ease with which criminals can strike seemingly secure neighborhoods.
Scott Erland, KPD Communications Manager, highlighted a troubling trend in these crimes, noting, "We do know that, oftentimes, criminals that are taking advantage and committing these burglaries are looking for guns." In a statement detailed by WIVK, he advised gun owners to responsibly secure their firearms by removing them from their vehicles when parked at home. The urgency of this advice is underscored by the fact that five of nine burglarized vehicles were left unlocked.
Residents of Knoxville's Sequoyah Hills and Farrington neighborhoods are encouraged to take precautions with their property and aid in the ongoing investigation. KPD has requested that any information related to the break-ins be reported using their non-emergency phone number as a channel for community involvement in addressing the current wave of property crimes.
