Teens of Kona are invited to participate in the third annual HI-PAL Outrigger Canoe Regatta, hosted by the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Kona Community Policing Section in partnership with the Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) and two local canoe clubs. Kai’ Opua Canoe Club and Kai ‘Ehitu Canoe Club are joining the event, scheduled for March 22. The event will feature canoe races and community activities, according to a report from Nixle.
The regatta is open to keiki ages 12 to 18, encouraging them to register and participate in one of the 14 events scheduled for the day. With over 200 young participants in previous years, organizers are expecting a similar level of engagement this year. "This regatta has proven to be wildly popular since it began three years ago with more than 200 keiki participating last year. We welcome teens to join us for a memorable day of competition, camaraderie, and community spirit," Kona Community Policing Officer Leonard Warren told the Hawai‘i Police Department.
The event will take place at Kailua Pier, located at 75-5664 Ka‘ahumanu Place, Kailua-Kona. Check-in will begin at 7:00 a.m., with the opening ceremony scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Races will follow shortly after, and the day will wrap up with lunch and an award ceremony, concluding by 12:30 p.m. It’s set to be a full day of activities.
Keiki and their guardians interested in participating must complete a HI-PAL permission/release form.
