A 25-year-old man from Kyle was arrested and charged following a series of cascading incidents that led to a train colliding with downed power lines on Wednesday evening in Kyle. CBS Austin reports that the suspect, identified as Anthony Miller, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated after his vehicle struck a telephone pole around 9:24 p.m. on Center Street.
The impact of Miller's crash caused the power lines to fall into the path of an oncoming vehicle, which then collided with the lines and flipped over. Moments later, the ill-fated timing of events continued to unfold as a train was forced to unexpectedly strike the low-hanging cables, effectively severing the lines and destroying the railroad crossing arm. Miller was arrested on the scene by Kyle police, who confirmed that no serious injuries occurred as a result of the chaotic sequence of events.
As informed by KXAN, the power outage and the communications disruption caused by the accident prompted rapid responses from local utility companies. Pedernales Electric Cooperative managed to restore power to all affected customers, while Frontier Communications endeavored to restore communications services. Meanwhile, Union Pacific crews worked on repairing the damaged railroad crossing to ensure Center Street could be reopened.
The Texas Department of Public Transportation has indicated that the railroad crossing will remain closed through midday Friday, as the necessary repair work continues to steadily progress. KXAN is working to obtain a comment from Miller's attorney regarding the charge, and has pledged to update the story with any new developments.
