The City of Lakewood is setting the stage for an inclusive and engaging event with the PossAbilities Expo, aimed squarely at connecting individuals with disabilities to valuable resources and recreational opportunities. Taking place on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Charles Whitlock Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., this expo is slated to be a hub of interactive presentations and demonstrations tailored for all ages and abilities. This event, which heralds the celebration of Therapeutic Recreation Month, is open to the public free of charge.
Attendees will have the chance to delve into a diverse range of topics including therapeutic recreation, adaptive sports, and healthcare. They can also expect to uncover information about funding sources and transportation among other essential services. A selection of vendors are prepared to also engage participants with hands-on demonstrations. "The PossAbilities Expo is hosted in recognition of Therapeutic Recreation Month and will feature a wide variety of vendors, resources and services for different abilities," as per the City of Lakewood.
In a move to widen its appeal and accessibility, the Expo will kick off with a sensory-friendly time block at 10:30 a.m. for individuals who could benefit from a quieter, less crowded environment. To cater to this need effectively, registration for this early access is required in advance of the event. A sensory break space and noise-reducing headphones will be available throughout the expo to ensure attendees can comfortably participate in the day's activities.
Demonstrations and workshops promise to be a highlight with participation from notable groups such as PASCO, 3D-PT, Speaking of Special Education, and DDRC. Additionally, a free dance workshop will be offered by Feel the Beat dance studio, aiming to showcase the expressive and therapeutic power of dance. Sporting and creative talents will be on full display with demonstrations from the Denver Barbarians, The Lockwood Foundation, Staunton State Park, and DanceAbility.
