The Los Angeles Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that transpired in the Southwest Division, according to a recent news release. The incident occurred on January 11, shortly after police responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon (ADW) stabbing at a local residential treatment facility.

Upon arrival at the scene, located on the 900 block of West 23rd Street, officers were confronted by the suspect, Brian Rolstad. Following an attempt to ascertain Rolstad's whereabouts with the help of the stabbing victim and witnesses, a tactical team was formed, and during a callout, the suspect emerged, knife in hand, and approached the officers, as per the LAPD PIO. Commands for Rolstad to drop the weapon were met with noncompliance, leading to an officer discharging a Beanbag Shotgun. After the suspect was struck by gunfire, he was struck in the chest and later pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital.
The staff member who suffered a stab wound to the face by the suspect was transported for medical attention and subsequently released. Identified as a black 6-inch folding knife with a blade of approximately 2 1/2 inches, the weapon used in the stabbing was retrieved from the roadway, as detailed by the LAPD PIO.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division (FID) is actively investigating the details of the officer-involved shooting, as the sequence of these tragic events continues to come into focus.
