Last Friday, Livermore Police conducted a series of compliance checks that shook up the local retail tobacco scene. Officers visited six merchants to verify adherence to California's ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products.
The crackdown, part of a statewide initiative to root out illegal tobacco trade, yielded transgressions that could cost a couple of Livermore store owners dearly. According to a social media post from the Livermore PD, fines looming over the horizon for one such proprietor might swell to $68,000, having been caught with not just prohibited flavor enhancers but also psilocybin mushrooms, which California law has not sanctioned for retail. The penalty for the other under-the-table flavored tobacco sold to a plainclothes officer could add up to $7,500.

The enforcement measures extend beyond the seizure of contraband. Funded by an $82,000 three-year tobacco enforcement grant from the California Department of Justice, such operations include minor decoy uses and further inspections. These concerted efforts mirror those in December when Livermore Police swept additional illegal products off the shelves.
