The South Coast AQMD has issued an air quality alert for Los Angeles and its surrounding areas which, warns of increased harmful particle pollution levels stemming from windblown dust and has enacted a mandatory wood-burning ban. Residents in the South Coast Air Basin, which includes parts of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange County, are instructed to refrain from burning wood, pellets, and manufactured fire logs in any wood-burning devices, both indoor and outdoor, as reported by the NWS Air Quality Alert.
With conditions expected to linger into the early hours of Tuesday, areas such as Malibu, Santa Monica, and Long Beach will be experiencing clear skies tonight; however, they are also accompanied by a potentially misleading air of tranquility as the North northeast winds persist at around 10 mph with gusts climbing as high as 15 mph. Conditions into the weekdays are predicted to remain sunny with temperatures lingering in the comfortable mid to high 60s, according to extended forecasts for Los Angeles.
The precautionary measures suggest that individuals, especially those with preexisting respiratory and heart conditions, should remain indoors with windows and doors sealed, use air conditioners or purifiers, and limit any outdoor activities to shorten durations. Specific advice for the public includes refraining from using fireplaces, candles, and gasoline-powered equipment, as detailed by the NWS Air Quality Alert. Instead, alternative sources to stay cool are advised. Concerned individuals are encouraged to monitor air quality levels through AQMD's website or mobile app to stay informed and react accordingly to the presented AQI levels.
