In response to the escalating number of homeless students in Marietta, local leaders and community organizations have received approval from the city council for a transitional housing initiative called Emmanuel's Village. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Marietta City Council recently endorsed the project, aiming to erect 15 tiny homes designated for students and their families currently without stable housing.

With over 500 students within Marietta and more than 1,900 in Cobb County schools facing homelessness, the need for such a solution is pressing. Kevin Pounds, associated with MUST Ministries, highlighted the dire circumstances these young people endure, "Some of them may live for a season in our emergency shelter at MUST. Some of them may live in a minivan in the Walmart parking lot for weeks at a time. Some of them are living in the extended stay," Pounds told FOX 5 Atlanta.

Molly Holm, a business owner in Marietta and a key figure in the conception of this project, utilized a vacant lot behind her business to provide the space needed for these homes. The project which seeks to provide not just shelter but a semblance of community for its residents, has been financed through private donations from local churches and nonprofits. As 11Alive reports, each tiny home is estimated to cost around $200,000.

The endeavor, Emmanuel's Village, is expected to offer more than just temporary housing. The plan, as expressed by Pounds, is "transitional housing that will move them from survival mode to stability," according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

Facilities like playgrounds and gardens are part of the design, aiming to assist these families in regaining a sense of normalcy, and an environment conducive to the success of the children in school, stressed by Verdaillia Turner from the Georgia Federation of Teachers in an interview with 11Alive.

Construction of Emmanuel's Village is slated to begin by the summer with the hope to welcome the first residents by fall. For those interested in supporting the project, donations are being accepted to contribute to the construction and upkeep of the homes and the overarching mission to provide stability for Marietta's homeless students.
