Visitors of the Maryland Zoo can look forward to some lofty new company with the debut of Kipepeo, affectionately nicknamed "Kipi," a young giraffe making her first public appearance since her arrival in late November. This Friday marks the end of Kipi's quarantine period and her official introduction to the zoo's guests, as reported by FOX Baltimore.
The reticulated giraffe, age three, hails from another Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institution and measures up to 12 feet tall—making her the shortest giraffe at Maryland Zoo. Her arrival comes as the zoo continues to grow, having welcomed a variety of species in the past year. According to FOX Baltimore, Kipi will be viewable in the Giraffe House from noon to 2 p.m. on Fridays through Mondays.
The Maryland Zoo has weathered both new additions and farewells. CBS News Baltimore detailed that the giraffe family lost Willow in March 2023. Willow, born at the zoo and a progeny of Juma and the still-present Caesar, passed away unexpectedly after a decline in appetite. Her legacy continues as part of the vibrant history of the zoo's Giraffe House.
The past year at the Maryland Zoo was particularly eventful regarding zoological milestones. Additions included giraffes and opossums named Moose and Salmon, a baby chimpanzee christened Ivy, and a northern ground hornbill chick dubbed Rwenzori. The zoo also bid adieu to Mr. Greedy, a senior African Penguin renowned for contributing extensively to the species' presence in zoos across North America. He was survived by his partner, Mrs. Greedy, with whom he arrived at the zoo in 1992.
