In preparation for some expected snow showers this Friday, Mayor Muriel Bowser is rolling out the District Snow Team starting at noon tomorrow, as per a statement from the Mayor's office. Bringing operations started yesterday evening, targeting all the major routes of transportation leading into and within the city's core.

The National Weather Service's forecast estimates possible snow showers this Friday afternoon, with accumulations of up to half an inch. Temperatures are expected to linger in the 30s over the weekend, dipping into the 20s during the nights. The Snow Team, equipped with 21 brine trucks, will apply a mix of salt, beet juice, and water to thoroughfares to prevent ice formation until Friday morning. Following that, a partial deployment of 44 various-sized plows will focus on higher-trafficked areas, including highways, streets, and bike lanes.

It's not just about the roads; residents and businesses play a role, too. Property owners are urged to spread abrasives on sidewalks in anticipation of the accumulating snow and ice, reducing potential slip hazards. Meanwhile, the urgent tidbit for restaurants and businesses: they should pull in any furniture or features from their outdoor areas or risk possible damage when the plows come through.

Regarding community well-being and safety during the cold snap, the city has issued a reminder about hypothermia awareness. Anyone noticing someone in need of shelter is encouraged to contact local services for assistance. Animal emergencies, particularly pets left in extreme cold, are also a concern, and a hotline is available for such cases. Additionally, residents can sign up for weather alerts from the District to receive updates and tips on managing winter weather, according to an announcement from the Mayor's Office.

For those not prepared to face the elements alone, the DC Volunteer Snow Team is ready to assist, particularly aiding senior residents and individuals with accessibility needs during snow events. The spirit of community shines as the plan unfolds; it’s not just about salting and shoveling but ensuring that everyone—from pedestrians to pets—is prepared and protected as winter weather sets in.
