Memphis residents can anticipate a pre-emptive strike against wintry conditions later this week, as the City of Memphis gears up to pre-treat roads with brine today. The proactive measure, as reported by the City of Memphis' official announcement, is part of a revised strategy for snow and ice mitigation that prioritizes certain roadways and ensures at least one lane in each direction is treated.
The Division of Public Works is preparing for possible inclement weather with its fleet of 15 snow and ice removal trucks and six brine trucks, deploying the latter when snow accumulations of 2 inches or higher are forecasted. They're closely monitoring the situation to respond rapidly as needed. As per the new plan detailed by the City, a map is available, outlining the routes set to receive snow and ice treatment, as well as marking the routes cleared by TDOT.
For those stranded or in need of shelter from the brisk chill, the City has partnered with the Hospitality Hub, which is currently operating two warming centers open round-the-clock. Women and families have a designated area at 590 Washington Avenue, while men and couples can seek refuge at the First Baptist Church on 200 East Parkway North. The Memphis Area Transit Authority is on standby, offering rides to warming centers upon request by calling 901-297-1680 during operating hours.
Officials are urging drivers who plan to brave the hazardous roads during a snow or ice event to exercise caution and patience. It's important to "give crews time to clear the roads after it snows," and remain vigilant to updated forecasts, essentially encouraging citizens to "be prepared" for what winter may bring. These tips provided by the City of Memphis' advisory can be the difference between a safe journey and perilous travel.
