A brush with credit card fraud has hit a Memphis community just before the holidays, with the Memphis Police Department broadcasting a call for assistance in identifying a suspect. The crime occurred in the 5100 block of Park Avenue, and law enforcement is asking for public help in tracking down the individual responsible for the theft.
According to a post on the Memphis Police Department's Facebook page, the incident took place on Tuesday, December 24, at a Shell station on 5211 Poplar Avenue. The report, bearing the number #2412029430ME, outlines that a male suspect made a purchase at a local shoe store with a stolen credit card. This act of theft, while technically a petty crime bellies the larger issues of identity theft and financial security that plague our daily lives.
The attached photo from the Memphis Police Department is meant to aid in catching the suspect, who stands accused of theft of property under $1,000, identity theft, and fraudulent use of a debit/credit card. As of the latest update, no arrest has been made, and the investigation remains in motion.
The authorities have made a point to reach out to the community for assistance. "Anyone with information of value to this case, such as information on the true identities of the suspect pictured here, is requested to contact Economic Crimes at 901-636-3350," urges the police department. Those with information regarding this financial crime are encouraged to come forward. Financial fraud, often seen as a victimless or less impactful crime, carries with it ripple effects that can disturb the financial peace of individuals and communities alike.
