A school bus transporting approximately 30 children encountered a crash yesterday afternoon in Augusta Township, Washtenaw County, resulting in minor injuries. According to CBS News Detroit, the bus from Lincoln Elementary School slid on ice around 4:13 p.m., leading to the driver losing control and the vehicle overturning in the 9700 block of Talladay Road. The Augusta Township Fire Department confirmed that all children were safely evacuated from the bus.
Seven individuals, including the driver and children, were reported to have incurred minor injuries from the incident. A Huron Valley Ambulance spokesperson informed CBS News Detroit that four children were transported to a hospital for their injuries. The driver was also hospitalized due to lower back pain. Lincoln Consolidated Schools released a statement on social media offering reassurance that "no major injuries" were noted and commended the patience and understanding of the community.
FOX 2 Detroit reports that the crash occurred when the bus driver made a turn on the icy roads while traveling at 10 mph, causing the bus to slide into a roadside ditch and tip onto its side. Lincoln Consolidated Schools officials stated that all students were successfully evacuated and would be taken home after responders had completed their assessments.
