A Monroe County sheriff's deputy's patrol vehicle took an unexpected dip into the icy River Raisin amid a dramatic pursuit last Saturday night, resulting in a rescue operation and the arrest of a 66-year-old Monroe man. According to ClickOnDetroit, the incident began when Deputy Brandon Larkins attempted to pull over the man driving a blue Ford F-150 for a traffic violation. The driver, however, did not comply, leading to a high-speed chase through multiple streets in Monroe County.
The events that unfolded saw the elderly driver side-swiping a utility pole and eventually halting near railroad tracks, where he got out of his vehicle, which reportedly became confrontational. "The Monroe man exited the truck and began to approach officers. They said he did not follow orders and was tasered before officers took him into custody," as reported by ClickOnDetroit. During the pursuit, a deputy's vehicle veered off the road and into the river to maintain the chase, leading to the deputy being temporarily trapped before managing to escape.
The suspect, whose name has yet to be released pending formal arraignment, faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. In addition to local officers, the Michigan State Police, Monroe Fire Department, and Monroe County Ambulance were on hand to assist at the chaotic scene. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has disseminated information regarding the chase and requested witnesses, asking anyone with details to call 734-240-7764, as detailed by CBS News Detroit.
Both the deputy and the detained man were hospitalized with minor injuries after the ordeal. A report from WTOL detailed that the suspect was also accused of "operating a vehicle while intoxicated." Meanwhile, investigations into the crash are being conducted, potentially revealing further details about the encounter.
