
Residents of southeast Louisiana should brace for cold weather as the National Weather Service in New Orleans issues an advisory and a freeze watch for the region. The weather alert highlights very cold wind chills hitting as low as 22 degrees; meanwhile, the freeze watch warns of potential sub-freezing temperatures that could fall to 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory, in effect until 9 AM CST, warns of cold temperatures that could lead to hypothermia without proper precautions. Residents are advised to wear warm clothing, including a hat and gloves. The current humidity is 70%, with a wind chill of 24°F, and the barometer reads 30.38 in (1028.0 mb), as stated by the National Weather Service.
In preparation for the cold, people are urged to protect tender plants and consider the needs of pets and outdoor animals during this time. With the cold front sweeping through the area, Wednesday night is forecast to bring areas of frost after 2am, shifting into possible showers and heavier rains towards the end of the week, as per the National Weather Service.
A freeze watch is in effect from late tonight until Wednesday morning, warning of the risk of hypothermia. The watch covers areas like New Orleans, Metairie, and Houma. With an 80% chance of rain Thursday night and heavy showers expected Friday, residents should stay prepared for a chilly and unpredictable week.
