A residential fire in New Orleans East was sparked by a fireplace early Monday morning, leading to the deployment of a team from the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD). According to official reports, the New Orleans Fire Department arrived at the scene at 7821 Brevard Ave around 9:28 a.m. to find heavy smoke pouring from the roof near the chimney.
The two adult occupants had already evacuated but alerted the firefighters to several pet cats still inside. Firefighters were able to rescue approximately twelve cats while they worked on extinguishing the blaze, which had originated in the living room area near the fireplace. The incident was reported as under control by 9:49 a.m., with the fireplace being identified as a culprit for the fire. It seems a portion of the chimney had collapsed after the fireplace was lit, igniting the incident, as per the New Orleans Fire Department.
In a statement provided by the New Orleans Fire Department, there were no injuries to the firefighters or civilians during the response. With the cause of the fire linked directly to the fireplace use, the department has issued a reminder regarding the importance of proper maintenance and care for alternative heating sources like fireplaces. They specifically warn against using any fireplace that hasn't been professionally inspected and cleaned in over a year.
While the swift action of the New Orleans Fire Department prevented potential tragedies, incidents like this one serve as a critical reminder of the risks associated with home heating. The public is advised to follow safety guidelines and ensure their heating equipment is in safe, working order before use.
