Tragedy struck early on New Year's Eve when two drivers lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on US 2 in Snohomish County. The accident called first responders from Snohomish County Fire District 4 to milepost 6 shortly before 7 a.m. FOX 13 Seattle reported that there were no other passengers in either of the vehicles involved.
Following the incident, US 2 was entirely shut down between State Route 9 and 88th St., as confirmed by the Washington State Patrol, which is also in charge of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. Accidents such as this often remind the community, alongside a statement from the Washington State Patrol reported by the Everett Post, of the profound impact one's actions on the road can have: "On this New Year’s Eve, we ask that everyone do their part and drive safely. Remember, your actions affect far more people than just you."
No estimation has been provided as to when the highway will be reopened to traffic. Travellers were urged to allow for additional travel time and consider alternate routes to reach their destinations. A detour has been put into place to assist the flow of traffic around the site of the tragedy. Multiple agencies, including crews from Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue and the Everett Fire Department, coordinated their response to the emergency situation, as covered by KING 5.
