In a significant victory for consumer protection, New York's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has successfully recovered over $11 million in vehicles, parts, and services for residents who fell victim to theft and fraudulent deals last year. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the state's ongoing commitment to safeguarding consumers, with the DMV playing a critical role in these efforts. "New Yorkers who buy a car or who have one repaired, need to know that New York will stand up for them and protect them," Hochul said in a statement obtained by the Governor's office.
Acting as a vigilant watchdog, the DMV's operations led to the recovery of 303 stolen vehicles last year, with a combined valuation of $8,353,334. Additionally, customers were aided in recouping $91,979 worth of stolen parts. DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder shared, "We take great pride in assisting customers when they need help, whether that is getting a title from a dealer that went out of business, working with clients and automotive businesses to address issues with a repair job, or recovering stolen vehicles," as detailed by the same announcement.
The DMV's enforcement was not just limited to vehicle recovery. They were instrumental in helping consumers reclaim titles, services, and refunds from dishonest auto dealers and repair shops. A total of 474 individuals received refunds or repairs valued at $1.48 million following the investigation of various consumer complaints against such businesses. Moreover, the DMV facilitated the recovery of 67 vehicle titles valued at over $1.56 million, ensuring the legal ownership transfer for customers dealing with unscrupulous dealers that had closed down or withheld the titles.
Recognizing the critical nature of vehicular reliance for daily life, state senators and assemblymembers have endorsed the DMV's work. They underscore the importance of having a robust system that not only reclaims tangible assets but also restores the peace of customers knowing their rights are protected. State Senator Leroy Comrie praised the DMV for their strong action to protect consumers and commended "Governor Hochul and the DMV for their commitment to combating auto theft and fraud," as mentioned in Hochul's announcement.
To further aid consumers, the DMV continues to offer guidance and resources on its website. They encourage dealing exclusively with registered repair shops and provide an online guide for locating DMV-regulated businesses. Customers who encounter unfair practices can file complaints directly through the DMV's platform. Additionally, the DMV issues advice for businesses on handling such complaints, ensuring that the process remains fair and transparent.
