In a clash of SEC titans, the No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers suffered their fourth loss in seven games, falling to the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats 78-73 this past Tuesday in Knoxville. Despite a valiant effort to claw back from an 11-point second-half deficit, the Volunteers struggled to sink their perimeter shots, a stark contrast to their nation-leading three-point defensive stats heading into the game. As reported by WATE, Tennessee watched their lead disappear early in the second half and couldn't recover as Kentucky's sharpshooting overpowered their defense.
On the offensive end, Tennessee attempted a season-high 45 three-pointers, of which only 11 met their target. Rick Barnes, Tennessee's coach, claimed that a whopping 95% of those attempts were wide open, but that wasn't a positive sign. "I don’t think they were the least bit concerned about us shooting tonight," Barnes remarked in a statement obtained by Knox News. This sentiment was subtly echoed by Kentucky's coach Mark Pope, who seemed untroubled by the Volunteers’ liberty at the arc.
Key players like Igor Milicic Jr. put up a fight for Tennessee, leading his team with 19 points. Yet, it was Kentucky's Koby Brea and Jaxson Robinson who stole the show, netting 18 and 17 points respectively, with high accuracy from three-point land. According to Reuters, Robinson was particularly lethal from deep, contributing significantly to the Wildcats' 50% three-point shooting performance.
Tennessee's momentary comeback in the final stretch was highlighted by a Chaz Lanier three-pointer cutting their deficit to just one point with less than 30 seconds on the clock. However, Kentucky's responsiveness at the free-throw line sealed their victory. Despite pulling within a three points, another missed three-pointer from Tennessee and clutch free throws from Otega Oweh doused any remaining hopes for a Volunteer resurgence. As they prepare to host Florida at the Food City Center, the Volunteers will undoubtedly be seeking redemption from their previous 30-point drubbing at the hands of the Gators earlier in the season.
